Incrementality testing: how to prove what your ads really add
Platforms take credit for sales that would have happened anyway. How geo holdouts, branded-search pause tests and conversion lift studies show what your ads really add.
Most performance marketing doesn’t fail because the campaigns are bad. It fails because measurement is broken, and budget follows whichever platform claims the most credit.
The short answer
Performance marketing that works starts with honest measurement: reconcile what Google, Meta and TikTok claim against your real orders, pause branded search to test it, and run geo holdouts. Then cut non-incremental spend and scale what is proven. Expect a 30-day audit, a restructure by day 60 and validated scaling by day 90.
Each ad platform counts the conversions it touched, under its own rules. When a customer sees an Instagram ad, clicks a Google ad and then buys, both can claim the sale. Add the dashboards together and you often get more sales than you made. A campaign reporting 6× might be closer to 2× in sales it actually caused.
Quick test: if the conversions your platforms report add up to more than about 15% above your real orders, you’re double counting.
Branded search is the usual first test because the evidence is strong: eBay’s experiments found brand-keyword ads had no measurable short-term benefit, published as NBER Working Paper 20171.

Reach is rarely the constraint in the UAE: Facebook’s ad reach was 9.70 million people (85.0% of the population) and YouTube’s 8.37 million in late 2025, according to DataReportal. Measurement is.
Previous-employer results, labelled as such: in-house at a Dubai curtains, blinds and interiors company, the paid account reached a 5.2× ROAS with acquisition cost down 30%, judged on booked measurements and orders. Read the ROAS that lies for the method.
Usually it’s platform-attributed ROAS, which credits each platform for every sale it touched. Several platforms claim the same order, so the combined figure overstates what the ads caused.

Google Ads, Meta (including Click-to-WhatsApp), TikTok, LinkedIn for B2B and Snapchat where the audience is there. The tests decide where budget goes.
Often, yes. Cutting non-incremental spend lowers platform-reported conversions before real revenue improves. The real impact usually shows from the second month.
No. Guarantees are a red flag. I commit to rigorous measurement, documented decisions and regular reporting.

A high ROAS can hide a loss. Why Meta, Google and TikTok each claim the same sale, and three tests that expose attribution inflation and broken tracking.
